The baby room at Windmill Pre-School & Day Nursery
The baby room caters for nine babies with a ratio of 1:3 staff to children. The room has a sensory area, cosy sleep area, and messy and exploratory play areas. There is direct access to our baby garden where we provide sensory play and shaded areas with artificial grass.
We also provide home-cooked weaning stage menus to suit all tastes, in line with seasonal foods. We frequently take the children on local walks in triple pushchairs to see the surrounding area.
Our communication books provide parents with an account of their baby’s day with us, as well as the opportunity to share experiences from home and to include messages.
This communication includes home-learning stories, where we ask parents to share events and milestones with the nursery as well as detailing their child’s individual interests.
The toddler room at Windmill Pre-School & Day Nursery
Our toddler room provides large bright spaces to help with the children's physical development. They have access to an indoor slide, as well as a large garden with planting area, sandpit, climbing equipment and bikes.
We support learning through various activities, using resources that encourage the children to be independent learners. This is reinforced with praise and encouragement throughout.
Mealtimes are a social time where the children sit in their key groups. The toddlers are encouraged to actively take part through self-service and helping clear the table. The nursery also has pets in the room to teach the children to care for living things as they explore the natural world.

Our two Nursery Rooms offer many opportunities for making interesting discoveries every day, from physical fun to experimenting with sand and water.
Windmill is the only purpose-built nursery in Hinckley with three under 2's rooms so parents don't have to worry about younger babies being with more adventurous toddlers.
The preschool room at Windmill Pre-School & Day Nursery
At our day nursery in Hinckley we have a large pre-school room with access to a fantastic outdoor space, as well as a wide range of programmable toys - including cameras and a smart board - to support children as they explore technology.
The smart board has also been used to support the children’s knowledge of other cultures. Every March, we have 'Living Eggs', where the children can see the life cycle of chickens, caterpillars and frogs from eggs to adulthood.
The pre-school room also provides adult-led teaching times. The children discuss topics of their choice in small key groups where they bring in their own 'chatterboxes' to talk about to the group. The children also have access to talking and thinking books and we have home learning bags which the children are encouraged to take home to share with their family. We also introduce children to phonics to support them in the transition to school.

The garden is split into three areas for different age groups, with free-flow access from each of the rooms. Children enjoy age-related environments in which to play and learn; including a separate baby and toddler garden for the little ones to explore. We also make the most of the park next door, too.
