The toddler room at Southampton Day Nursery
The toddlers at our children's nursery in Southampton have fun using their physical skills on the baby gym and low-level balancing blocks.
Practising their independence of climbing steps, balancing and sliding down the slide. A large floor standing easel is available for the children to use various creative resources such as paint, crayons and glue.
The children also experience cooking, not only baking cakes and biscuits but enriching their vocabulary and understanding, by staff talking about textures, smells, size and measurements.
The nursery room at Southampton Day Nursery
In the Nursery Room children have access to a wide variety of creative resources where they can develop their fine manipulative skills. We encourage them to talk about the beautiful creations they make and support early reading through a language rich environment.
The children also start to look at why things happen (cause and effect) and we encourage greater independence at meals time and with self care routines.
The staff work with the children in group creative activities to make props to support imaginative play and also to create social environments, where children can make positive relationships with their peers.
The preschool room at Southampton Day Nursery
Pre-school at our children's day nursery in Southampton is where the children start to get ready for school. There is an emphasis on learning letters and sounds supported by literacy resources and teacher-led activities and we will be introducing Spannish lessons on Monday and Friday afternoons.
Children thrive and are proud of writing their name on artwork, and begin stringing letters together to read short simple words. Mathematics is available in all areas.
Children start to recognise numerals and experiment with weight and measure, floating and sinking. The large wooden blocks allow children to build and construct using their imagination and team work skills.
Role play is a popular choice and is re-invented every few weeks to depict the children’s interests. Creative resources are freely accessible with children’s interests portrayed. When a child feels they need a quiet space we have a lovely inviting area to meet that need.
The outdoor spaces at Southampton Day Nursery
The outdoor area provides lots of opportunity for exploring and learning. Access to the outdoors is essential for healthy development in the early years. Studies show that it is necessary to have access to outdoor physical play to support early reading and writing.
The mud kitchen is a popular choice involving mark making on our large chalkboard, writing the menu of the day: “Wiggly worm pie” and “Mud cakes”. Alongside this is a large digging area where children are able to use large physical skills such as digging in the mud, mixing and pouring whilst promoting imaginative and communication skills.
Our new story stage supports social development as children share and enjoy interactive tools as they sit together and join in with the stories.
It promotes concentration, anticipation and listening skills as they act out stories and recall events.
The Den sparks the imagination for creative role play using rich and descriptive language and also develops social skills and encourages children to work as a team.

Just wanted to say thanks for the lovely graduation ceremony and picture at the weekend. Was a really lovely end to Ethan’s time with you and have some lovely photos to remember it by! Well done to the girls in the pre-school room for all of their hard work!
Hollie - July 2016
My twins, started at Southampton two weeks ago, before which we had about 2 months of settling in. While we were looking at nurseries, this offer was particularly attractive and has actually proved now to be invaluable - I don't appreciate then how important it would be to phase my babies into their nursery experience.
Knowing what I know now, I would say this settling in process should be a feature of all nurseries. I also didn't appreciate how important it was for me too - it can be just as difficult for us leaving babies and the nursery staff couldn't have been any more sensitive, caring and helpful in this regard.
Never did I feel under pressure to leave or stay. On settle days that I wanted to stay in the room with them , that was ok, and on days when I wanted to simulate dropping them off and walking away, that was fine too. Rachel was amazing and so quickly helped me feel confident I could leave the girls with her knowing they would be cared for as well as at home. She took the time to listen to all my instructions and routines and quirks and 'just in cases', but more amazingly remembered it all. She made me feel like they were just as important to her as they are to me; quite how I don't know, but I can't stress how important that was, and still is. I trust her implicitly, without any doubts or concerns. The whole settling in process enabled that to happen - I'm not sure how easy that would have been, or how long it would have taken had we gone straight into starting nursery as normal.
The sessions were brilliantly organised, scheduled to make sure the girls met everyone who worked in the room, and covered all the different activities and experiences throughout the day - sleep times, snack and meal times and activities. By the time we actually started nothing was unfamiliar to the girls and I think this made it so much easier for them to settle in to their full days.
Overall, nothing but positive. I genuinely believe in constructive feedback and I've thought long and hard about whether there's anything I could suggest or recommend, but our experience has been so good and I really can't think of anything I would change about it.
Hannah - May 2015
Absolutely brilliant day nursery! Helped with potty training my son and gave me tips on how to reward etc. When my husband died, Becky and her team contacted charities and obtained reading books that I could read to my son. They have supported my son and I with such compassion during such a difficult time in our lives.Amazing team at Southampton Day Nursery.
Mother of a 3 year old son - July 2014
Asquith has been excellent in providing safe environment for both of my children. The staff have very nurturing attitude and very observant and supportive with children's learning. They also provide very detailed feedback at each end of day, making me feel part of my children's day. The care they provide also is customisable to your preference / child's ability / demand.
Mother of 2 children at Southampton Day Nursery - May 2014
To all the super staff at Asquith Southampton,
Many thanks for everything you all do to keep our girls happy and secure each time they come.
They have both gained so much from being here already and we couldn't be more grateful.
Becky & Ben - December 2013
Leaving your child in someone else's care is always going to be nerve wracking. When I first walked into the nursery I was welcomed by caring and friendly enthusiastic staff. I felt completely assured that the staff would do a wonderful job of looking after my husband's and I most precious possession and they absolutely do. It is an outstanding nursery and the commitment and dedication to each child and their family shines through. We are so impressed with the cleanliness, communication and leadership. Thank you everyone.
Nicky - December 2013
Just a quick note to say thank you to your ladies who do such a fabulous job of looking after my precious bunny. I am thrilled with the way they are so personal with her and I thank them for that.
Heidi - November 2012
Dear Becky, Sarah & the Pre-school team,
We just wanted to write and thank you all for the kindness and care that you showed to Matthew during his time at Southampton Day Nursery. He was only with you for a matter of months, but I can tell that he has developed so much during that time. He has met such great friends and grown in confidence, much of this is down to the compassion and understanding that he received at Asquith. We are truly grateful.
Matthew and Kate - November 2012
I would just like to say that for the past 10 months that Leighton has attended nursery he has changed so much, his development in all areas has come on leaps and bounds which I am amazed and so happy with. Sophie has been the best key worker, taking on board what Leighton enjoys (water balloons!) and incorporating it into The Early Years Foundation Stage. Leighton loves coming in to play and learn with his friends, I am really sad he has to leave.
