For childcare in Southborough and nursery services in the Southborough area of Kent

Woodlands children's pre-school provides care for children aged 2 to 4 and is rated 'Outstanding' by Ofsted. Set in a converted school in beautiful woods next to Southborough Common and behind St Peter’s Church, there is plenty of space to park, making drop-offs and collections easy for parents.

Younger children, between 3 months and 2 years, are now catered for by our Woodlands day nursery, situated in a newly refurbished, bespoke building in Springfield Road. More information can be found here.

The children's nursery is light and airy with large windows and high ceilings. Our rooms are sparkling from our recent refurbishment which, together with all the new furniture and resources, has had a huge impact on all of our children’s learning and development.

We feed into many local schools such as Southborough, Speldhurst, Langton Green, Bidborough, St Matthews and St Johns and work closely with all of them to help ease transitions between nursery and ‘big school’.

At Woodlands, our Southborough children's day nursery, we use a 'key person' approach to support parents and children from the very start. Your child’s key person will follow your child’s individual routine and build their day around your preferences and wishes.

We offer eight-week 'settling in' sessions before your child starts, to enable you and your child to build relationships with your key person and provide an insight into the day-to-day running of the nursery.  We tailor the sessions to each family, based on discussions and observations.

We also have a fully qualified Special Educational Needs Co-ordinator (SENCO) who works here at Woodlands to help and support children and families with additional needs.

Our amazing outside area has just been completely refitted to support children in all areas of their learning and development. We have a beautiful tipi for cosy story times and a wavy and bumpy path to help children develop an awareness that not all surfaces are flat.

Children at our Southborough pre-school can take part in activities including planting, digging, sand and water play in our Amazing adventure garden, as well as hunting for mini-beasts: all of which help with sensory development. The amazing nature observatory overlooking the woods makes our garden a very special place for children to learn, develop and discover the natural world.

Special Offers at Woodlands Pre-School

The nursery room at Woodlands Pre-School

The nursery is a large bright room with a viewing gantry that allows the children to safely climb the stairs and look out of the windows into the surrounding woods. The children love being able to watch the birds and squirrels and see what the weather is doing on a daily basis.

The room is designed to encourage the children to be independent and make their own choices in what they play with.  All toys and resources are set at the children’s level, sand, water and paint are always available for the children along with planned activities provided by the children’s key person. There is also lots of encouragement to tidy up!

The children are encouraged to self-serve their own lunches, with support from staff if required. There is an adjoining changing area, with low-level toilets so the children can be supported with potty training as and when they are ready.

The preschool room at Woodlands Pre-School

Situated on the first floor of the Southborough children's day nursery, our pre-school room is a large, bright airy space. The room can hold 24 children at anyone time and is extremely popular and busy. It boasts a good range of ICT facilities, including a large SMART board and touch-screen computer.

The room is laid out like a classroom to help the children get ready for ‘big school’. Toys and resources are easily accessible so the children can choose what they would like to do.  There is also ‘teacher time’ where the children carry out planned activities with specific learning outcomes. We place an emphasis on numeracy, literacy and phonics.

The children go outside at least twice a day, whatever the weather.  Activities include tending the vegetables in our vegetable patches, visiting the surrounding woodlands to build hides to watch the birds and animals through their binoculars, or heading up to the common to play parachute games or hold a mini Olympics!

The outdoor spaces at Woodlands Pre-School

Being outdoors is a great way for children to learn about the world they live in and explore at their own pace. Our fantastic garden area in our Southborough pre-school has just been completely refitted to support children in all areas of their learning and development.

We have a beautiful tipi for cosy story time, a wave path and Astroturf, which is a much safer surface for children to play on.

Planting, digging and looking for mini beasts all help with sensory development, and the amazing nature observatory overlooking the woods makes our garden a very special place for children. It really is a non-stop learning adventure with endless things to explore and discover.

Testimonials about Woodlands Pre-School

I am the mother of Isaac, who has been attending Woodlands children's day nursery in Southborough for the last 4 years since he was 8 months old.  He started in the Baby Room and has worked his way up through the Toddler Room, Nursery Room, and the last 2 years in Pre-School.

Isaac's last session at Woodlands is tomorrow, as he has now started Primary School, and this is his final week of settlinging-in before going full time.

I wanted to write to you as it is easier for me to put down in words the gratitude I have for all of the staff at Woodlands for Isaac's time with them - somehow a simple 'thank you' card just didn't seem enough!

I could not have been happier with the care, attention, education and loving enironment that has been provided for Isaac whilst attending Woodlands.  Through every step of his Woodlands journey he has been fully supported and cared for - through settling-in, weaning, potty training and Early Years Education.  As a result I have a wonderful, kind, sociable, grounded son, who has started his school years with a definite advantage to a lot of the other children in his new class.

Thanks to the staff at Woodlands he has developed into a smart young man who is eager to learn, has confidence and good manners - the tranisition into Primary School has been easy for him as he was so well prepared for it.

Also, as a parent, I feel that the level of contact and support I have received has been brilliant.  Staff have always been available to listen to any concerns, support any needs we have, and to keep me informed through every step of Isaac's progress - from the management, office staff and nursery/preschool staff.

The facilities and activities provided at Woodlands are fantastic - each room is well equipped and the range of topics and subjects for discussion and learning have been great.  Not forgetting the fantastic garden too, and of course having the woodlands just outside to explore.

I think it is plain to see for anyone that this is a nursery truly worthy of it's Outstanding Ofsted rating.

I would like to particularly mention a few staff who I think have really gone above and beyond in their care of Isaac - Pamela Wilson and Tasha Rhone in Pre-School.  Both of these amazing ladies have invested their time and care into making Isaac the person he is today, and have taken a personal interest in his wellbeing - I have promised that we will keep in touch and I know that Isaac's new school will also let them know of his progress there.

Also, Pam Hook, the manager - Pam is always available to talk to (I have wondered if she lived there as she is always around!), and the administration, communications and support from her and her team have been fantastic.  Particular mention to Alex too as Isaac adores him!

I really do hope to keep in touch with the team, and have recommended Woodlands to everyone (including promoting at my place of work), and would be more than happy for you to use my comments for any promotion.

It really is an end of an era, and both Isaac and I are sad to be leaving, but looking forward to this next part of Isaac's education journey.

Your staff at Woodlands deserve much praise and recognition, which is why I wanted to write to you personally, as I hope that they get the rewards they deserve.

Thank you again, and I wish everyone at Woodlands and in the Asquith Group all the best for the future.
Teri - September 2014

Without getting too emotional, it's the end of an era for us. All three girls have loved Woodlands and the people that work there. We have always felt confident we were leaving them in a safe, nurturing, fun, caring environment. We can't thank you all enough.
Emma - July 2014

We have been using Woodlands since February 2007 and so it truly does feel like the end of an era!

Both my sons (Ethan and Noah) have had the most amazing experience at Woodlands right from the Baby Room at 6 months of age, the Toddler Room and then Pre-School.  Each room prepared them for moving into the next step and the transition really smooth.  Pre-School were amazing, particularly with Ethan who started school two weeks after turning 4 and they helped us prepare him with practical things such as toilet hygiene etc.  Noah has loved Pre-School and even though he has been here a lot longer than Ethan, he has been kept interested doing his phonics and speaking French.

The nursery itself is in the perfect location, the staff are amazing and the fact the children are treated as family make for it the best!  We will miss it very much!

Thank you for taking such great care of both of my boys.
Sarah and Chris - June 2014

We looked at lots of nurseries before enrolling our son, but none of them had the same homely feel as Woodlands. It has lived up to all of our expectations and more! The staff are great, the atmosphere is lovely, the learning that they do is amazing and we love the outside space. Our son adores it there.  To us, that is the most important thing.

My son has attended Woodlands since he was 8 months old, and will soon be heading up to the pre-school. He has been extremely happy at Woodlands and, as a parent, I couldn't have asked for more from a childcare provider. All of the staff are friendly and helpful, and genuinely care for my son's wellbeing and education. They listen to and work with me to ensure his developmental and emotional needs are met and that he is happy. My son's development has come on in leaps and bounds whilst attending Woodlands and he has become a confident, kind, polite and happy child. The facilities at Woodlands are excellent, giving him the best start possible before school life. I am happy and confident when I drop my son off that he is well cared for and I don't need to worry.

My daughter has attended Woodlands nursery and pre-school since she was 9 months old. I have nothing but praise for the staff and management team. My daughter even wants to be there at weekends. My daughter will be leaving for 'big school' this September and we will miss Woodlands enormously and is growing up to be a very happy, intelligent, polite, affectionate and confident little girl.  Woodlands has played a huge part of helping her achieve this. The support, understanding and love that Woodlands offers is second to none.

I would like to take this opportunity to put in writing how exceptional I find the nursery and the care that you provide. My son is growing in his personality and mental capabilities as well as his physical development and this is thanks to the staff at Woodlands. You take such care to make sure that as parents we not only have a safe environment for our children to blossom in but also one which is open and honest.
